Botanical name: Solanum melongena. Common name: Aubergine or eggplant. Aubergine is a tender vegetable that is related to the tomato. The bushes grow 1.8m tall with hairy grey-green leaves. The flowers are white to purple, with a five-lobed corolla and yellow stamens. The glossy fruits of the aubergine are an essential ingredient of moussaka. Position: in humus-rich soil or in a grow bag in full sun. Situate against a warm wall if planted out of doors or in a greenhouse. Plant care: water well before planting and keep moist.
