A very thorny, deciduous shrub which is mainly cultivated for its colourful foliage. The leaves are small and button shaped, and deep purple in colour. It is an excellent plant for hedging or for keeping out unwanted guest. It responds well to pruning hence making it good for hedges. It is very low maintenance.
